Luckily, these concepts don’t get much harder than the Algebra II level math classes that most of us took in high school.ĮTS also offers a Math Review PDF that promises to help you understand the concepts needed to solve problems as well as how to reason quantitatively. In both cases, the mathematical concepts and abilities tested fall into four main categories:įor a full list of the topics that fall under these categories, be sure to check out the Introduction to the Quantitative Reasoning section article on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. The rest appears in purely mathematical form. Most of GRE Quant appears in word problem format. Unlike your math teacher who gave you partial credit for showing your work, the GRE only cares that you select the correct answer choice. The key to finding the answer to GRE Math problems lies in finding a way to unwrap the problem using logic.Īnd remember: The GRE doesn’t reward you for process. Just as GRE Verbal tests your ability to analyze or “reason with” written English, GRE Math tests your ability to reason using numbers. But what the GRE Quantitative Reasoning measure really tests is the logic you use to approach problem solving. Technically, GRE QR assesses your ability to deal with number properties and standard geometric figures. Let’s take a look at how to study for GRE math and the tools you’ll need to do for an efficient GRE math review. Once you figure out what the question is asking (often easier said than done), the math involved in solving the problem is actually fairly basic. The difficulty of GRE Quantitative Reasoning comes from the need to logically reason your way through each problem. In fact, remembering all the geometry proofs, calculus, and trigonometry that you learned back in high school won’t help you at all on the GRE Math section. Students are admitted to mathematics courses based for the most part on MPA results as shown in the following Scaled Scores table. Please note that the minimum ALEKS scores are subject to annual adjustments, and in support of student academic success. The GRE Quantitative Reasoning measure is NOT a test of advanced math. Students who are up to 5 points above the “cut-off” score requirements for the class in which they enroll should anticipate spending a greater than average amount of effort and study time to earn a satisfactory math grade in the class. If you enroll in a math class for which your ALEKS MPA score is close to the minimum requirement, spend time before the class begins to review the associated prerequisite math concepts. *Note: Your first ALEKS score will not count for math placement at Western - we treat ALEKS MPA #1 as a practice test for our students. The scores for ALEKS MPA #2 - Proctored (or highest of scores from MPA 2, 3, or 4 if you should decide to reassess) will count as official for math placement and registration purposes. Your proposed program of study will determine the appropriate Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning (QSR) option and which math class you may need if you are unsure about these options please review the academic advising resources. All undergraduate degrees at Western required students show a minimum level of proficiency in Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning (QSR).
